Cotto is now unbeaten in 27 fights |
Miguel Cotto retained his WBO light welterweight title for the sixth time by outpointing a stubborn Paul Malignaggi in New York. The Puerto Rican looked set for a simple win at Madison Square Garden after Malignaggi suffered a cut above his eye in the first round.
Malignaggi was then floored in the second but the Italian-American somehow managed to get back into the fight.
Cotto was given some problems but got the decision from all three judges.
Two gave him a 116-111 verdict while the third scored the fight 115-112.
"I'm happy with the decision. I didn't think it was going to be this tough," said Cotto, who is a possible future opponent for Britain's WBA welterweight champion Ricky Hatton.
But first, Cotto is set to fight former lightweight king Jose Luis Castillo of Mexico in November.
