McCullough scoffs at Larios claim
Wayne McCullough

Wayne McCullough has scoffed at claims that he will be stopped by Oscar Larios in Saturday's WBC super bantamweight title rematch in Las Vegas.

McCullough claimed the judges did him no favours when Larios got a wide points verdict in February.

"There were no signs in the first fight that he is going to knock me out this time," said McCullough who has never been stopped in 32 professional bouts.

However, the 35-year-old Belfastman has lost his last five world title bouts.

Larios is promoted by former world champion Oscar De La Hoya who says that a stoppage of the durable McCullough would be a major step forward in the Mexican's career.

"Oscar Larios is one step away from that really big fight," said De La Hoya.

If Larios beats McCullough again, De La Hoya believes he could move up in weight to fight either Juan Manuel Marquez for his two featherweight belts or former world champion Erik Morales.

Larios has said that he was affected by a shoulder injury in the February bout although McCullough, seven years the Mexican's senior, has rubbished those claims.

McCullough, known as the Pocket Rocket, held the WBC bantamweight title in the mid-1990s but over the last eight years he has failed in world title bouts against Daniel Zaragoza, Naseem Hamed, Morales, Scott Harrison and Larios.

The Larios-McCullough bout will be on the undercard to the world middleweight championship fight between champion Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
