Castillo (right) and Corrales delivered on their promise of an open fight |
Diego Corrales recovered from being knocked down twice in the 10th round to beat Jose Luis Castillo and capture the WBC lightweight title in Las Vegas. Corrales, the WBO champion, was sent to the canvas by two left hooks early in what turned out to be the final round.
But, after looking destined for defeat, he got up to mount a sensational attack that left Castillo defenceless.
Castillo took punch after unanswered punch to the head before referee Tony Weeks jumped in to stop the bout.
"I've waited for a long time to show my will and prove I'm a warrior," Corrales said. "I knew I was going to get up."
Both fighters traded ferocious blows throughout a thrilling encounter and neither backed off as the contest progressed.
Amazingly, neither fighter went down until the 10th round but both were hurt on several occasions as they traded huge punches.
Both fighters ended up in the hospital for precautionary tests when it was all done.
In another title fight, Juan Manuel Marquez dominated Victor Polo to retain his WBA and IBF featherweight crowns.
Marquez dropped Polo in the seventh round with a right hand but was never able to stop him despite winning almost every round on the three ringside scorecards.
Marquez won the unanimous decision by scores of 120-107, 119-108 and 118-109.
