Skelton makes light work of rival

Skelton may take on the winner of Audley Harrison v Danny Williams
Matt Skelton retained his British heavyweight title with a first-round stoppage of John McDermott on Saturday.

Skelton forced the referee to intervene after just 79 seconds of the clash at London's ExCel Arena by decking his outclassed opponent three times.

Skelton now hopes to take on the winner Danny Williams who beat Audley Harrison in the main fight of the night.

"Many people don't like the way I fight but I'm getting the job done," the 38-year-old Skelton told BBC Sport.

McDermott never recovered from Skelton's cracking left-right combination just seconds into the fight which decked him for the first time.

The remaining knockdowns came from less conclusive punches and had McDermott complaining of being pushed to the canvas as he was being led back to his corner.

However, Skelton got the job done in style against the former ABA champion, who was expected to give him more problems than he did.

Skelton is due to make a mandatory title defence in January against Scott Gammer.

The Welshman recovered from an early knockdown to record a points win over Armenian Suren Kalachyan on the undercard.

But the Skelton is now more likely to face Williams, with promoter Frank Warren lining up a world title shot for the winner.
