Harrison will stay in the USA for now |
British heavyweight Audley Harrison has decided to vacate the WBF title to pursue his boxing career in the USA. The 33-year-old, who has not fought for nine months, stood to lose the belt if he failed to defend it by June.
But his team stressed that Harrison had not been stripped of the title.
"Audley is concentrating on a career in the USA which takes a different path to the WBF title," said the fighter's business manager Hazel Bruno-Gilbert.
"We are grateful for the support we have received from the WBF, but the decision has been made that Audley will be vacating the title.
"A-Force Promotions would like to thank (world president) Mick Croucher and the WBF for their support and would like to wish them the best for the future."
Harrison, who is back in full training after recovering from a hand injury, has not chosen a date for his ring comeback.
But the former Olympic champion, last seen in action against Tomasz Bonin on 19 June, is expected to make an announcement about his future in the "near future".
