Magee fighting fit for Calzaghe

Brian Magee believes he will go into Friday's WBO world super middleweight challenge against Joe Calzaghe in the best shape of his career.

Nutritionist Joe Dunbar has been part of the Magee camp in the build-up to the contest at the King's Hall.

"Joe's been monitoring my diet and making sure that I eat all the right things," Magee told BBC Sport.

"He gives me peace of mind that I'm doing the right things and making sure I don't overdo training and get stale."

Magee acknowledges that six months ago he could not have envisaged getting this crack at Calzaghe.

Last summer, his career suffered a huge setback when he lost his IBO super middleweight title in a points defeat by English veteran Robin Reid.

And there are several pundits who reckon the 29-year-old Belfastman represents a handy 16th title defence for Calzaghe.

The Welshman will have noticed that Reid had Magee on the King's Hall canvas on four occasions last year even though the final points verdict was tight.

But in contrast to the view that Magee's career will effectively be over once he is dispatched by Calzaghe, the Irishman is convinced that "there is a long way ahead of me" in the professional game.

"This is a great position for me to be in. Fighting for a world title and fighting the best in the world in this division."

Magee's best chance of an upset could be if Calzaghe produces the same lacklustre form he showed in his previous outing against Kabary Salem last October.

Certainly, Magee's trainer Harry Hawkins believes Calzaghe is there for the taking.

"Calzaghe leaves himself open when he attacks," said Hawkins.

"He only knows one way to fight and that is going forward. Brian is a natural counter-puncher, so Calzaghe is going to come on to his shots.

"But we're not just going to be waiting for Calzaghe. We're going out to win the fight.

"This is a chance of a lifetime for Brian and Calzaghe's style will suit him.

"We're the home fighter as well, so we'll have a packed out crowd behind Brian - and I don't think Calzaghe will know what's hit him."

There have been suggestions the Welshman is having major difficulties making the super middleweight limit and his decision to take on a dietician for this fight adds substance to those claims.

However, Magee insists he is expecting to face an in-form Calzaghe.

"All those troubles seem to have been going on for the last three or four years but he has still remained unbeaten.

"As far as I'm concerned, he will be coming into the ring in tip-top condition and totally mentally focused."
