Skelton is a former world champion kick-boxer |
British and Commonwealth champion Matt Skelton stopped Argentine rival Fabio Eduardo Moli to win the vacant WBU heavyweight belt on Friday. Skelton, in only his 16th professional fight, dominated an opponent who weighted in at a massive 19st 13lbs.
The 38-year-old from Bedford bundled the bulky Moli over inside the first minute and forced an eight count.
Skelton continued to attack and floored Moli three times in the sixth round before the referee stopped the fight.
Skelton could now make the first defence of his WBU belt against fellow Briton Danny Williams, who knocked out Mike Tyson last year before succumbing to Vitali Klitschko in his world title bid.
 | The critics have doubted my boxing skills but nobody can doubt my ability to fight |
"I will fight anyone they put in front of me," said Skelton, who has only been taken the distance once, and that was by fellow Briton Julius Francis. "I want to fight for a major version of the world title by the end of the year and if I am offered the opportunity to fight Klitschko I will be ready for it.
"The critics have doubted my boxing skills but nobody can doubt my ability to fight. I am always in the gym and I am ready for anybody.
"I want to go as far as I can in this game."
On the same Wembley bill, British lightweight champion Graham Earl lost his unbeaten record when he suffered a shock points defeat against Scottish youngster Ricky Burns.
Referee Richie Davies awarded 21-year-old Burns, from Coatbridge, a 79-75 decision over Luton's Earl, winner of all his previous 23 fights.
The victory in the non-title eight-rounder took Burns' winning run to 10 fights since he left the amateurs.
