The pressure is on Calzaghe to fight a big name |
Joe Calzaghe's career remains in limbo after a year of crushing anti-climax. Having blown a shot at the IBF light heavyweight title, he saw Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson each KO Roy Jones and arrange their own mega-clash.
Calzaghe continues to target Johnson, that fight's winner, but he is far from the top box-office draw in the States.
Pressure is on promoter Frank Warren, but with concerns that Calzaghe is past his peak an uninspiring defence against Mario Veit seems next on his list.
Warren has to deliver for Enzo Maccarinelli as well as Calzaghe.
 | BIG FIGHTS TO HOPE FOR: Calzaghe v Johnson Maccarinelli v Nelson Gammer v Skelton Lockett v Farnell Rees v Cook Doherty v Pryce |
The Swansea cruiserweight's career has not moved on since a scintillating domestic clash with Garry Delaney. WBO champion Johnny Nelson remains the main target, but that does not look imminent and there seems a reluctance to expose Maccarinelli at world level.
Lee Swaby, Carl Thompson, David Haye and Mark Hobson are attractive fights at UK level, with Hobson perhaps the most likely next step for the Welshman.
Jason Cook faces a difficult choice after losing his IBO title. He is struggling to make lightweight, but his best options are in that division.
Gavin Rees also needs to decide on a division and get on track after weight problems lost him a WBO title shot.
Gary Lockett looks set for exciting tussles with Wayne Elcock and Anthony Farnell, while Scott Gammer is starting to thrill at heavyweight.
Jamie Arthur will be out to raise his profile if he can overcome cut trouble.
ONE TO WATCH
With the careers of many of Wales' boxing stars on hold, welterweight Tony Doherty is the fighter to excite the fans.
The Pontypool man had eight fights in 2004, winning them all to extend his 100% record to 12-0 (6 KOs).
If the opponents were journeymen, the way he has despatched experienced men like Karl Taylor and Peter Dunn has had the experts purring with delight.
Doherty is up to 18th in the rankings on a competitive domestic scene, and a wealth of attractive match-ups await the 21-year-old and his huge fan club.
