Calzaghe inflicted Veit's only defeat in their title bout three years ago |
Mario Veit remains on course for a Joe Calzaghe rematch after a ninth-round stoppage of Charles Brewer in Riesa. The German dropped ex-IBF champion Brewer in the second and dominated the fight for the best win of his career.
Veit is interim WBO super middleweight champion, with Calzaghe the WBO's 'super' champion at the weight.
Calzaghe blew Veit away in one round three years ago, but that is his only loss and Calzaghe could not stop Brewer when he beat him in Cardiff in 2002.
Veit has 44 wins to his name and he boasts 15 victories since the Calzaghe setback. Calzaghe is expected to be back in action in February, but it is thought he favours a move up to challenge for a title at light heavyweight rather than a Veit rematch.
Should he stay at super middleweight, a meeting with IBF champion Jeff Lacy is thought to be the Welshman's favoured option.
