The most you can say about Joe Calzaghe's points victory over Kabary Salem was that it was another win - other than that there were not a lot of positives.
 | Joe's really struggling to work off those last three pounds to make super middleweight |
He didn't have the crispness to his work, there was nothing sharp about him and he was not heavy handed. He could not hurt Salem. Joe has had a rough time with his personal life and that's affected him mentally. There are a lot of demons in his head and that is bound to reflect in his performance.
After speaking to [Joe's trainer and father] Enzo Calzaghe and Joe, he's really struggling to work off those last three pounds to make super middleweight.
That's giving him problems with fluids leading to dehydration in the later rounds.
I don't think he has any option but to move up to the light heavyweight division, but even if he does that he will have problems.
You never carry your power up a division, and while Joe will be bulking up guys like Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson are big men who will be trimming down to make the weight.
 | Another performance like the last one and we could see a fighter like Salem taking the title off Joe |
I also happen to think that Johnson, who is Calzaghe's number-one target, is a very, very under-rated champion. I think Joe is feeling cornered and wondering where he goes from here.
Perhaps WBC super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy's people will fancy the job after seeing the Salem fight, but that wouldn't alter the fact that Joe is struggling at 168lbs.
Another performance like the last one and we could see a fighter like Salem taking the title off Joe, let alone someone of Lacy's calibre.
Joe has done everything asked of him and defeated everybody who has been put in front of him.
How many champions retire undefeated? If Joe considers that, I certainly wouldn't oppose him getting out at the top.
