Rees faces acid test
Gavin Rees and trainer Enzo Calzaghe
Calzaghe is confident Rees can handle the step up
Trainer Enzo Calzaghe says Gavin Rees' WBO super featherweight clash with Mike Achondo will show if his undefeated fighter is the real deal.

"It's going to be a real test, and we are going to find out if Gavin is a fake or the real stuff," Calzaghe told the Sports Network website.

"Some guys Achondo has boxed haven't been great. Ages and records are similar so it could be a great fight."

The bout will be held in the American Airlines Arena, Dallas, on 15 July.

It's a chance to fight for a real world title
Rees' trainer Enzo Calzaghe
Calzaghe compared the test faced by Newbridge fighter Rees to the challenge his son Joe met in beating Chris Eubank for the WBO super middleweight title.

"We faced a similar situation when Joe faced Eubank," said Calzaghe.

"It's a step up, but what an amazing opportunity.

"It's a chance to fight for a real world title against a highly rated guy and find out what level you are at.

"Gavin has had a lot of amateur experience, he went all over the world when he boxed at a high standard for Wales.

"I travelled abroad with the amateurs too, so it's nothing new for me either."
