It was fourth time lucky for Siaca (left) after three failed title bids |
Puerto Rico's Manny Siaca is the new WBA super middleweight champion after beating Anthony Mundine on points. Siaca beat the Australian title-holder on a split decision, improving his record to 18 wins - 16 by knockout - and four losses.
It was Mundine's second defeat in 22 fights and he was making the first defence of the WBA title proper.
Siaca, 28, sent Mundine to the canvas at the end of the second round and was the aggressor for most of the fight.
It was Siaca's fourth challenge for the same title in his last seven fights having previously come up short against Bruno Girard and twice against Byron Mitchell.
Mundine won the WBA's interim title when he scored a unanimous points decision over America's Antwun Echols in Sydney last September but was promoted to full champion status when Sven Ottke announced his retirement last month.
The former rugby league star sustained an ankle injury in training ahead of the fight and was told by doctors to call it off.
