Docherty wins Watt backing
Craig Docherty (left) meets Jim Watt in Glasgow
Scottish boxing legend Jim Watt believes Craig Docherty has what is takes to reach the very top.

The Commonwealth super featherweight champion is out to emulate Watt, who won the world and European titles.

"There are a lot of things I like about Craig. I like his attitude and his courage," said Watt.

"He is improving in every other aspect of the game as well and he is heading towards being world class. There is no reason why he can't go all the way."

Docherty will take on Russian Boris Sinitsin for the European title at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall on 15 October.

"This is the big test, to win a European title, and it's the proper route to go down," added Watt.

"You have to win domestic titles, Commonwealth and European first.

"Then when you've got the confidence of being European champion you know you are already champion of part of the world and there's no reason why you can't take the next step.

"He's in a tough division but there are a couple more world titles on the go than when I was boxing.

"There is no way the guy hasn't got at least a 50-50 chance of picking up one of those titles.

"The next year will determine how good a talent Craig is going to be but he has the ticker and he has the ability and he is improving. He can go all the way."

Gary Jacobs was the last Scot to win a European title.
