British super middleweight Robin Reid has failed in his attempt to win back a world title after losing to Germany's Sven Ottke on Saturday night. Ottke hung on to his WBA and IBF titles with a unanimous points decision, ending a run of 11 wins for Reid.
Reid, who won the WBC title six years ago, received numerous warnings for minor indiscretions from the referee throughout the fight.
"I thought I won the fight by two or three rounds," he said.
"The referee was warning me all the time. We found out that we were three points behind after five rounds - and I won the first three rounds.
"The rules say if you hit a man you score points, why is the referee taking points off me?"
The Briton began brightly and was the more aggressive in the opening round, and probably just had the advantage after the early rounds.
In the fifth round, Reid got his first warning, for using the side of his glove.
He was also being constantly reminded about getting his head in too close to Ottke.
The German was on the floor early in the sixth, but only as a result of shaky footwork, and the round ended with Reid being officially docked a point for the use of his head.
Reid was unable to take advantage of swelling over his opponent's right eye in the seventh, and Ottke landed a sharp right in the eighth which forced the Briton to cling to his opponent for a breather.
Ottke was left gasping for breath by an accidental low blow in the ninth.
But Reid got nothing out of the 10th and Ottke spent the 11th and 12th rounds hanging on for his win.
