Arthur ready for Gomez
Alex Arthur had trouble with the scales on Friday
British super-featherweight champion Alex Arthur had to shift six ounces in 45 minutes to make the weight for Saturday's defence of his crown against Michael Gomez.

The Edinburgh fighter had to sweat it out on the eve of the fight but remains cool and confident about his chances in the ring.

Arthur insists he has Gomez's limited style worked out and claims he has the experience and adaptability to cope with whatever problems his opponent can pose.

"I don't think he can surprise me," said Arthur.

"He's not going to switch to southpaw and dance around the ring but if he does then I'll be ready for it.

"The fans might be pushing me to take the fight to him but I'm just going to go with my initial instincts and do what I know is right for me at the time.

"Sometimes you have to change your tactics on the spot in the ring but I've got that ability. I can adapt to any situation and any style."

However, Gomez is a big-hitter and is predicting a victory inside the distance.

The Mancunian, whose chequered past has led to questions over his attitude, is convinced he can cause an upset at Meadowbank in front of Arthur's home crowd.

I doubt it will go to points because something has to give, because we are both up for the fight

"The only way I can see Alex beating me is if the fight goes to a points decision," he said.

"But I doubt it will go to points because something has to give, because we are both up for the fight.

"But words are cheap. We can all talk until we are blue in the face but when that bell goes all the supporters go back, all the trainers go back and me and Alex go forward."

Gomez insists reclaiming his title is only a stepping stone to bigger things.

He said: "I'm not worried about seeing the belt sitting in front of Alex because I've got one of them at home under my bed.

"No disrespect to the British title or the Lonsdale Belt because, believe me, I dedicated my life to winning it.

"But the fight is not about me winning my belt back, it's about getting my career back to where I was two years ago.

"The only person who has ever beaten me in the past, I feel, has been me."

Arthur meanwhile has defended the decision to stage the fight at Meadowbank, where the 3,500 capacity has meant thousands of boxing fans will not get to see the contest.

Arthur said: "The Edinburgh people deserve this and it's been a long time coming.

"It's good for the people to see a championship fighter perform in front of them because it's never happened for years."
