Morales dethroned Espadas in 2001 |
Erik Morales set up a possible meeting with WBC super-featherweight champion Jesus Chavez by knocking out Guty Espadas in three rounds in Los Angeles. The WBC featherweight champion had beaten his Mexican opponent on points in 2001, but found victory much easier this time round.
Morales was in control from the start and delivered the knock-out punch late in the third.
As Espadas launched a series of looping punches, Morales countered with a short left and followed it up with a stinging right near the left temple.
Espadas's reaction was delayed, as he flinched, then tried to back away, but his legs slowly crumpled under him and he sank to the canvas.
"I knew the first time around I was better than I showed," Morales said.
"Last time I wasn't physically able to do what I wanted to do and I beat him anyway.
"So I wanted to prove to everyone I was much better than he was. I think tonight I did that."
The knock-out was the 34th of Morales's professional career, and he has lost only one of his 46 bouts.
