Tszyu won the world title off Mitchell |
Kostya Tszyu's title bout against American Sharmba Mitchell has been put back for at least two months after the Australian suffered an Achilles tendon injury. Matthew Watt, who manages the undisputed world light-welterweight champion said the injury occurred in a training session earlier this week.
Watt claimed that the proposed bout in Moscow on 27 September will be rescheduled for late November or early December.
Although Watt admitted that Tszyu had still not finalised terms with promoter Vlad Warton, the venue and opponent would remain unchanged.
"This is a hiccup, but we don't want to focus on the injury, we want to focus on Kostya fighting later in the year," Watt was quoted as saying in The Australian newspaper:
Russian-born Tszyu took the World Boxing Association title away from Mitchell in 2001 and is looking forward to his first professional fight in the land of his birth.
The 33-year-old has a record of 30 wins, one loss and one no-contest and is a long-term target for Manchester's WBU title holder Ricky Hatton.
