Audley Harrison has told BBC Sport he has set himself a 12-month deadline to claim the British heavyweight title. The Olympic gold medallist maintained his 100% professional record with a comfortable points victory over Ratko Draskovic on Saturday.
Now Harrison is confident he can step up a gear and challenge Danny Williams for his British crown.
"By this time next year I will be the British champion," said the 31-year-old.
"I will also be continuing to fight in America this year because I have to think of the world picture.
"And that will slow the progress for the British title but I can tell you that will happen within the next year."
No matter who I'm fighting I'll make the fight look easy |
Harrison has been criticised since his high-profile entrance into the professional ring for choosing easy opponents. But the Londoner revealed he does not let the negativity affect his long-term ambitions.
"It's all about the personal goal I set for myself when I turned professional," he said.
"It's not about money or fame, it's about the glory of becoming heavyweight champion of the world.
"I have a 100% conviction in what I'm doing and so I smile and let all the negative criticism go over my head."
Harrison's defeat of Draskovic was the final fight of his exclusive two-year deal with the BBC. But the heavyweight hinted that he would like to renew the deal - and not just for financial reasons.
"It's not really about money, that is secondary," Harrison said. "I have options and though I made an impact in the US I want to stay here in Britain.
"It's been a great start with the BBC on terrestrial (television) not just for Audley Harrison but for promoting boxing in this country.
"It would be good if that could continue. Everyone has to be reasonably pleased with the Draskovic fight and that should seal it."
