Johnson wants to strip Lewis (above) of his WBC belt |
Canada's Kirk Johnson says he wants to take on Lennox Lewis if the WBC heavyweight champion's rematch with Mike Tyson does not happen. The American is stalling on signing a lucrative contract to get back in the ring with Lewis, which leaves the Briton in need of another opponent.
Johnson believes he is the perfect replacement for Tyson and is full of confidence after emphatically defeating Lou Savarase early this month.
"I want Lennox Lewis, it's plain and simple," the 31-year-old said. "I respect Lennox right now, however I am confident I can beat him."
We have already had talks about making this fight happen Johnson's promoter Dan Duva |
Johnson's promoter Dan Duva also believes a Johnson-Lewis showdown could be a potential money-spinner in the Canadian market. Despite choosing to represent Britain, Lewis won a gold medal for Canada in the 1988 Olympics.
"It would be the single biggest sporting event in Canadian history," said Duva.
"We have had several conversations about making this championship fight in June.
"I also believe that it is currently the biggest fight out there for Lennox."
Lewis has not been in the ring since his devastating eight-round victory over Tyson in Memphis last June.
But Johnson might find the step-up in class beyond him as his only shot at a world title against John Ruiz ended in disappointment - he was disqualified for persistent low blows.
