Mundine keen to rescue Dragons

Mundine has enjoyed some success in the ring
Former St George star Anthony Mundine is ready to turn his back on boxing and come to the aid of the ailing Dragons.

Nickname 'The Man' and 'Choc', Mundine says he would love to play for the NRL club again after seeing them struggle in the first few weeks of the 2002 season.

"If the call came out from the club then I would come back," he told his official website.

"Money isn't the motivating factor behind this, I would play for free."

Mundine, one of Australia's most controversial sportsmen, quit rugby league in 2000 to concentrate on a career in the ring.

And he had some success before suffering a knockout at the hands of IBF super-middleweight champion Sven Ottke at the end of last year.

Now, though, he is eyeing a return to rugby league.

"The Dragons have lost a lot of experience in the past year and I would love the opportunity to lead these young guys and be an inspiration to them," said the 26-year-old.

"My supreme athletic talent means that it wouldn't matter where I played. Right now we need some leadership and that is what I can bring."

The former five-eighth has been linked with a return to the NRL in the past, with South Sydney Rabbitohs expressing interest in signing him.

But it appears that he would only come back for the Dragons, who are currently languishing in 11th spot in the NRL.

"The fans deserve the best and in 'The Man' that is what they would get," he said.

"I am a supreme athlete who would love nothing more than to wear that Red Vee with pride once again."
