Tszyu and Hopkins share top prize
Bernard Hopkins
Hopkins out-boxed Felix Trinidad for the WBA belt
BBC Sport Online's James Blears reports from the World Boxing Council's annual awards.

The WBC has shared its blue riband Boxer of the Year award between Russian-Australian Kostya Tszyu, the world junior-welterweight champion, and world middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins from the United States.

Hopkins defeated Keith Holmes to gain the WBC title and then sensationally out-boxed and overwhelmed Puerto Rico's Felix Trinidad for the WBA version.

He has now unified the middleweight title for the first time since the glory days of Marvellous Marvin Hagler in the mid 1980s.

Tszyu's defining moment came when he defeated IBF champion Zab Judah with a second round knockout.

He also knocked out WBA champion Sharmba Mitchell to hold aloft the three main belts.

The WBC adjudged the Hopkins-Trinidad bout in New York's Madison Square Garden on 29 September, its Fight of the Year.

The honour of Knockout of the Year, goes to Britain's Lennox Lewis for his clinical fourth round demolition of Hasim Rahman, who had previously dispatched him in five.

Oscar de la Hoya wins the Comeback Award for his knockout of Arturo Gatti, and then his masterful twelve rounds points victory over Spain's Francisco Castillejo.

In doing so, he put the disappointments of losses to Felix Trinidad and Sugar Shane Mosley behind him, and now has the rare distinction of having won world titles at five different weights.

Undefeated welterweight Mosley, of the United States, wins Outstanding Boxer of The Year.

Mosely is considered by many to be one of the finest pound for pound fighters in the world.

During the year he knocked out Australia's Shannon Taylor in five rounds, and Britain's Adrian Stone in just three.

Roy Jones Jr wins the Excellence prize for his sheer consistency.

On 22 November he celebrated five years as the WBC's light heavyweight champion.

Floyd Mayweather Jr receives an honorary mention for his dramatic knockout of Diego Corrales, decision win over Carlos Hernandez and knockout of Jesus Chavez.
