Bekele's star rises
Kenenisa Bekele
Bekele hopes to follow in the footsteps of Gebrselassie
BBC Sport's Steve Cram reviews the action at the World Cross Country Championships where Kenenisa Bekele secured a unique double.

There is a reason why Kenenisa Bekele's achievement in winning both the long-course and short-course World Cross Country Championships is so startling.

The double has of course been done before in the women's event, mainly because the long race, which is most athletes' main event, comes first.

With the men, it is the other way round and that means many athletes are not in the right shape to tackle the long course, having completed the short course a day previously.

And Bekele's victory was all the more remarkable when you consider the strength of the Kenyan team.

They looked strong on paper before the race but they were nowhere near the Ethiopian, which was strange.

It begs the question: did the Kenyans run badly or is Bekele a fantastic talent?

I think it is the latter, although the Kenyans could have been quicker.

Bekele is much better than his compatriot Haile Gebrselassie over cross-country but it remains to be seen whether he can transfer that speed to the track.

This season might not be the one in which we find out. Bekele will clearly not be involved in the two big events, namely the Commonweath Games and the European Championships.

However, he will definitely be one to watch on the Grand Prix circuit.

His emergence could not have come at a better time for the long-distance events, with Gebrselassie looking as if he is coming to the end of his track career.

Bekele could be the one to take advantage of the gaping hole he will leave behind.

Americans emerge

Paula Radcliffe's win in the long-course on Saturday was what we all hoped would happen.

She has had problems with her knee and we have to hope that there will be no reaction over the next few weeks.

But apart from her win, it was a very average weekend for Britain and the really impressive team performance came from the Americans.

They emerged as a growing talent and it will be interesting to see how they progress in the future.

The highlight as far as the home crowd was concerned was the return of Sonia O'Sullivan just 13 weeks after giving birth.

And she ran a great race to clinch the bronze medal for Ireland.
