Russian Sergey Makarov clinched the men's javelin title with his very first throw at the World Championships in Paris. The 30-year-old surged in to the lead in the first round with a throw of 85.44m and his mark could not be bettered.
Andrus Varnik from Estonia took the silver after reaching 85.17m at his first attempt.
Germany's Boris Henry, who is the boyfriend of American sprinter Kelli White, claimed the bronze with his best effort of 84.74m.
The reigning champion and world record holder Jan Zelezny might have returned from injury too soon as he could only finish in fourth place with 84.09m.
Britain's Steve Backley missed out on another opportunity to win his first global gold medal as he slid to ninth place after only reaching 80.13m.
