Italy's Giuseppe Gibilisco was the surprise winner of the men's pole vault final at the World Championships in Paris. The 24-year-old had set the benchmark throughout the competition and was the only athlete to soar over 5.90m setting a new Italian record in the process.
Gibilisco's previous best was 5.82m set earlier this year.
Commonwealth champion Okkert Brits climbed to a season's best of 5.85m at his second attempt to take the silver.
Sweden's Patrik Kristainsson, the boyfriend of heptathlon champion Carolina Kluft, claimed the bronze medal with a lifetime's best effort of 5.85m.
Defending champion Dmitri Markov of Australia battled through the competition but failed at all three attempts to clear 5.90m.
The competition was cast wide open after French favourite Romain Mesnil, who had set the world's leading mark this year and Israel's European champion Alex Averbukh failed to qualify for the final.
