Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna took discus gold in Paris to end Lars Riedel's hopes of a sixth world title Lithuanian Alekna made an explosive start to the competition, throwing 69.69 metres with his first attempt - a mark that could not be bettered.
Hungary's Robert Fazekas, who is the only man to surpass the 70m mark this season, took silver with a second-round throw of 69.01m.
The final podium position was claimed by Belarussian Vasiliy Kaptyukh with another impressive first throw of 66.51m.
German Riedel was chasing his sixth world title at the age of 36, but, despite a marvellous opening throw of 66.28m, he finished out of the medals in fourth.
Pole vaulter Sergei Bubka is the only athlete to have won six world titles.
