Jessica Ennis (front) will lead the team in the French capital in March |
Fit-again Jessica Ennis and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey have been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland European Indoor Championships squad. Both athletes had been considered doubts for Paris with Ennis recovering from an ankle complaint and Aikines-Aryeetey a hamstring problem. In the women's 60m, 17-year-old Jodie Williams will make her senior debut. Mo Farah and Dwain Chambers were also selected in the 32-strong squad for the event, which starts on 4 March. World and European heptathlon Ennis is set to compete in the pentathlon, having recovered from the ankle injury that led to her pulling out of last weekend's Aviva Grand Prix in Birmingham. Sprinter Aikines-Aryeetey, who will line up up alongside defending champion Chambers, suffered an injury in Birmingham after the 60m final, in which he finished sixth. Joel Fearon will also make his senior debut in the event after Mark Lewis-Francis was ruled out because of injury. "There will be many good athletes competing in Paris, not least of all the other British athletes, but if I stay healthy and focused I must stand as good a chance as any other athlete," said Chambers, who will be looking to retain the title he won in Turin two years ago. The trio will be joined in the squad by Hertfordshire schoolgirl Williams, the world youth and junior champion and winner of the trials in Sheffield, who added: "I'm really excited to be in the team, my hard work through the winter has paid off. | I expect the world-class guys to win medals but I am also interested to see the debutants in action |
"Taking the step up to the seniors is quite scary, it's going to be a good experience and a learning curve but I feel like I'm ready." Having won the 3,000m gold two years ago, Farah is favourite to triumph once more after setting a new European record over 5,000m in Birmingham on Saturday. The team is smaller than usual in part because some athletes have been given extra time to recover from last October's Commonwealth Games but UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee insisted he was still confident the team could amass a healthy medal haul. "This is a strong team which can realistically challenge for medals and top-eight finishes, and I expect just that given the mix of experience and potential within the line-up," he said. "I am especially happy with the fact that 10 out of the 32 athletes make their first senior appearance." There will be full coverage of the European Athletics Championships on BBC TV, Red Button, 5 Live and online.
