Scotland's Freya Murray finished second at the Great South Run in Portsmouth in her maiden 10-mile race.

The 27-year-old became the UK's fifth fastest performer of all time as she finished in 52 minutes 27 seconds.

Commonwealth 10,000m gold medallist Grace Momyani won in 52.03 , with Hungary's Aniko Kalovics third.

World cross country champion Joseph Ebuya won the men's race in a UK all-comers' record of 45:16 as Kenya secured a first double for three years.

Ebuya took advantage of perfect weather conditions to master the flat and fast course and strike a huge 40 seconds from the previous record of 45:56, achieved 15 years previously by Benson Masya.

The 23-year-old was making his debut over the distance, and his time is the quickest in the world this year.

His performance was all the more impressive as he ran the last six miles on his own.

"I think with pacemakers I could probably have run closer to 45 minutes but it doesn't matter - this is an important win," he said.

Saif Saeed Shaheen and Vincent Yator finished well behind in second and third, with times of 46:37 and 47:28 respectively.

Murray, who was fifth in the 10,000m track event at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, was persuaded to race by her United States-based coach Steve Jones - the British marathon record holder.

"I couldn't believe it, I didn't know what to expect in my first race at the distance," she said. "I spoke with Steve on the telephone and he told me to get out there and mix it, give it my best shot.

"When Grace broke away Kalovics was still running strongly and I was determined to stay with her.

"I just kept telling myself go, go, go - and it paid off when I got clear at halfway and that made me more determined to stay in front. I'm amazed to have run so quickly as I was tired after Delhi.

"But it was something new and has certainly told me a lot about myself and longer distances."
