Channel Islands Athletics team face tough weekend

Athletics

The Channel Islands men's athletics squad are in Glasgow this weekend hoping to maintain their second place in the British Athletics League.

The team trail leaders Glasgow in Division Four, with two meetings to go.

A second-place finish would seal promotion for the team, although they will be without marathon runner Steve Dawes for the Glasgow meet.

The women's CI team are in Portsmouth on Sunday, hoping to avoid relegation from Division Three.

Head coach Andrew Winnie knows both squads face tough challenges this weekend, albeit at different ends of the table.

Winnie said: "I would hope that the men's team can consolidate this second place, which would leave us sitting in a potential promotion spot when we host the final league match in Guernsey."

"The men competing in the track and field events are very strong, which is great."

He added: "All we can do is keep our fingers crossed for the women's squad.

"We need a shade of luck this weekend to keep us in this division."

The men's squad is made up of nine Guernsey and seven Jersey athletes, with Guernsey javelin thrower James Brehaut making his senior debut.
