Gay suffered the latest injury while competing in Manchester last month

American sprinter Tyson Gay has been warned by his doctor that running too fast is causing him injury problems.

Gay has been plagued by injuries since the Beijing Olympics and will miss Saturday's Diamond League meeting in New York with a hamstring problem.

"I'm going to see a nutritional expert this week. He said I'm running too fast for my body," said the three-time world championship gold medallist.

"There is no reason at 27-years-old I should be getting injured every year."

Gay, who ran 9.71 seconds behind Usain Bolt in last year's World Championships final in Berlin, suffered the latest injury while competing in the 200m straight race at last month's Manchester City Games.

He has consulted German-based doctor Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt, who also works with Bolt, but is now seeking more specific expertise to address his ongoing problems.

Gay added: "It's something I could be deficient in and the nutrition expert wants to find out the problem and why my muscles can't handle me running that fast and why my body is not letting it happen.

"He's going to really take a look at my body and get me eating right and doing everything I can to make my body able to handle running those speeds.

"I can tell you for the past couple of weeks I've been mentally drained, tired and frustrated because I'm hurt almost every year and it's not fun."

Despite his injury concerns, the fastest American of all time still believes he can break Bolt's 100m world record of 9.58 this season - but feels he must beat the Jamaican in the process.

"At the end of the day if I break the world record without Bolt in it, everyone will say 'Tyson Gay broke the world record but Usain Bolt was not in the race'.

"I want to run 9.5 - I think I can. That's my goal, and I'm not going to quit until I'm able to reach that goal."

Gay won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the 2007 World Championships, and silver in the 100m at the 2009 World Championships.

He is also the American 100m record holder with a time of 9.69 seconds.
