Zurich's Letzigrund stadium regularly hosts IAAF Golden League meetings

Zurich's newly-renovated 28,000-seater Letzigrund stadium will host the 2014 European Athletics Championships.

"Athletics is a hugely popular sport in Switzerland and we can look forward to a fantastic event," said European Athletics president Hansjorg Wirz.

The biennial championships take place this year in Barcelona from 26 July to 1 August, while the 2012 edition is scheduled for Helsinki.

Zurich will be the second Swiss city to hold the event after Bern in 1954.
