Dobriskey hopes for world glory

Lisa Dobriskey
Dobriskey won gold in the 1500 metres at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Ashford's 1500m runner Lisa Dobriskey is optimistic about her chances at the World Athletics Championships.

The 25-year-old told BBC Radio Kent she will be taking the Berlin meeting one race at a time.

"I never like to compete just to take part. The key thing is to not get carried away with medals.

"Initially you have to get through the first round, so I just like to set my targets as I go. You can't win a medal if you're not in the finals," she said.

Dobriskey's preparations have been far from ideal, suffering a stress fracture to her back, followed by a thigh injury. But she praised her support staff for helping her through a "difficult winter."

"My coach has been brilliant in developing me to get to this point on such little training. I feel like I can be at my best when the Championships come round," she said.

With her seat safe on plane to Germany, Dobriskey, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2006, is looking forward to competing at the highest level again.

"I'm really excited. I'm getting closer and closer to being the athlete I know I can be. To be coming into good form in time for the World Championships is a really exciting prospect for me."

The World Athletics Championships take place in Berlin from August 15-23 2009.
