Parsons' Berlin dream still alive

Birchfield athlete Tom Parsons has not given up hope of making it to the World Championships next month, despite a poor performance in the trials.

The high jumper, 25, finished third at the Alexander Stadium and still has not registered an 'A' standard height.

"Unfortunately it's just a few technical hiccups at the moment, I'm doing 100 things wrong on the run-up," Parsons told BBC WM.

"I need to get more things right and at least jump a 'B' standard for Berlin."

Parsons' new Birchfield team-mate, the Olympic silver medallist Germaine Mason, won the high jump at the trials, and looks certain to be selected for the World Championships.

That leaves Parsons chasing a season's best in the two weeks before the selectors convene to name the final squad for Berlin.

"There's a couple of opportunities left - I think I could do the Birmingham Games next week," said the Aston Villa fan.

"Crystal Palace is the deadline weekend - if I get selected for the Grand Prix that would give me a good chance to prove that I'm capable of doing well against some good opposition."

The British team for the World Championships will be named on Tuesday 28 July.
