Highlights - Ennis wins high jump and hurdles (UK only) Jessica Ennis maintained her impressive form with victory in the 100m hurdles and high jump at the World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham. Ennis easily won the high jump with a first-time clearance of 1.85m before taking the hurdles in 12.87 seconds. Phillips Idowu needed just one attempt to win the triple jump with a leap of 17.05m, with Nathan Douglas second. Jemma Simpson led from the front in the 800m, while Toby Sandeman finished brilliantly to win the 200m in 20.69. Sprinter Dwain Chambers, who was expected to go for a sprint double, withdrew early on Sunday from the 200m. | 606: DEBATE |
Chambers was beaten by Simeon Williamson in the 100m on Saturday, but is still likely to run both sprints at the Worlds next month in Berlin having clocked the A-standard qualification time four times. In his absence it was Sandeman who produced one of the biggest shocks of the weekend as he beat Marlon Devonish and Leon Baptiste, with top ranked Jeffrey Lawal-Balogun disappointingly down the field. Despite recording a personal best, Sandeman has yet to achieve the "A" qualifying standard for the World Championships in Berlin. "Last year I got injured in the first round here but I said I'd saved enough money from work to take a year off and I was going to come back and win it," he said. Simpson recorded the fastest 800m time by a British woman this year with 1.59.31 in Madrid last week and the Cornish runner continued her superb form. The 25-year-old led from the front before powering through the final 100m to beat Jenny Meadows and Marilyn Okoro, winning in 2.01.17 in the final race of the night. "I wasn't sure how the race would go because of the wind," said Simpson. "I ran a good 400m which isn't the normal way for me to run but I just thought go for it." Performance director Charles Van Commenee picked out the performances of Williamson and Ennis as the highlights of the weekend, calling the 100m winner's Saturday showing "outstanding". His final Worlds team selections will be announced on 28 July following the London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace. Ennis is one of the favourites for the heptathlon at the World Championships in Berlin. On Sunday the 23-year-old cleared 1.91m - a season's best - but she had already won the competition with a first-time clearance of 1.85m. She later failed with three attempts at 1.94m. Heptathlon rival Kelly Sotherton placed third in the high jump with a best of 1.82m. Ennis' stunning time in the hurdles was a championship record at 20.69, just 0.07 seconds outside the British record. "I'm really pleased. It's nice to come out and have a good go and I had three good attempts at 1.94m. I'm a bit disappointed not to get it but next time out I think I can have it," she said of her high jump effort. "Everything is going well at the moment and I'm really enjoying myself. Hopefully I will save my best for Berlin." In the day's other main events, Olympian Rob Tobin won the 400m in 45.55 seconds, Michael Rimmer cruised home in the 800m clocking 1:46.47secs, while Chris Tomlinson leapt 8.03m to become long jump champion. David Greene won the 400m hurdles to confirm his emergence as a genuine prospect. Meanwhile Goldie Sayers returned to competition following a stress fracture of the spine with a best throw of 55.33m in the javelin, which gave her a comfortable victory.
