Chambers looks favourite to repeat last year's success in the 100m
Dwain Chambers was the fastest qualifier in the 100m heats as the World Trials and UK Championships in Birmingham kicked off on Friday.
The 31-year-old eased through in 10.20 seconds, with rival Simeon Williamson also impressing in a time of 10.24.
Craig Pickering, Tyrone Edgar, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Mark Lewis-Francis also progressed to Saturday's semis.
World and Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu qualified for the 400m final when she won her heat in 51.86 seconds.
Ohuruogu shrugged off a farcical false start that saw Dawn Hunt sprint about 90m before the recall gun was fired.
After another false start the race finally got away with Ohuruogu quickly opening up a big lead and easing to victory.
Britain's top talent - including Jess Ennis and Phillips Idowu - are in Birmingham for three days as they battle for selection ahead of the World Championships in Berlin next month.
Competition in the men's 100m is fierce. With only the first across the line guaranteed a place in the team, the five heats were the first of the action in the Alexander Stadium on Friday.
Hot favourite Chambers admitted there was still work to be done, despite his fastest qualifying time.
"It's just the heats, the most important thing is to get the first one out the way and get ready for Saturday," Chambers said, who is also running in the 200m.
"The World Championships have been high on my agenda from the start of the year so it's all about qualifying."
With the likes of Williamson, Edgar and Pickering all pushing hard for a place in Germany, Chambers added: "Everybody wants a sub-10 second performance and I know I'll have stiff competition.
"I need to keep my cool. These boys are a lot younger but I'm confident. I'll go down fighting whatever I do."
Joice Maduaka was the fastest in the women's 100m heats, clocking 11.45, with Abi Oyepitan (11.57), Montell Douglas (11.61) and Laura Turner (11.62) also comfortably progressing.
Day in the life of Christine Ohuruogu
Ohuruogu, Olympic 400m champion, should line up in Saturday night's 400m final, having opted last week against competing in the 200m.
The Londoner has only run in the 400m twice this season, which included a disappointing sixth behind arch-rival Sanya Richards in last week's Bislett Games in Oslo.
"It's a big summer and I want to be at my best for the Worlds," the 25-year-old Ohuruogu said.
The Londoner's rivals - the 400m final is on Saturday at 1752 BST - will include defending UK champion Lee McConnell and in-form Vicky Barr, part of the silver medal-winning 4x400m quartet at the European Indoor Championships earlier this year.
Ohuruogu added: "Running over 400m in Birmingham will be really useful to me and will undoubtedly help me keep on track with my plans in the run up to Berlin.
"As ever, it will be a strong race, which can only be a positive experience for us all."
The men's 400m will also be a hotly-contested race, with top-ranked American-born Michael Bingham, fit-again Tim Benjamin and Olympian Rob Tobin all in action, although Martyn Rooney has been ruled out with a hamstring injury.
