A Cornish schoolgirl from Truro has been selected to represent Great Britain at the IAAF World Youth games.

Annabel Gummow, 15, will be competing in the 3000m race at the games at Bressanone in Italy next month.

Gummow who runs for Bristol and West AC, told BBC Radio Cornwall about the excitement of being picked.

"I got a phone call on Monday afternoon but I was at school, so I rang back and they told me that I'd been selected and I was over the moon," she said.

The 15-year-old has run cross-country for England Schools over the past two years and said the 3000m event will provide a fresh set of challenges.

"Track-running is all about timing," she added. "If you don't get your timing right you just won't do it."

Gummow only started running competitively in 2005 and is determined to build on her success so far.

She said: "I want to go all the way. I'd rather be a half decent junior and then go all the way through seniors.

"I want to carry on and go to the Olympics and make a career out of athletics."

The 3000m takes place on 8 July, which is the first day of the World Youth games, where Gummow will face competition from young athletes from across the world.
