Christian Malcolm hopes to lead Cardiff to victory in the pilot event |
Olympic 200m sprinter Christian Malcolm has been named captain of the Cardiff team for next month's Super 8 competition in the Welsh capital. The action-packed, two-hour contest on 10 June, is modelled on Twenty20 cricket and organisers hope to launch an eight-team league in 2010. "It really is an honour to be asked to captain Cardiff at the first Super 8 competition," said Malcolm. Welshman Malcolm came sixth in last year's Beijing Olympics 200m final. He added: "The competition is a great idea and I can see some friendly rivalry between the Great Britain and Northern Ireland athletes building already which will make for some interesting events. "I hope the people of Cardiff will come out to support the home team and give the other cities something to live up to when Super 8 takes place in their city." With something happening every few minutes, there are five track events, five field events and medley relays over varying distances. | 606: DEBATE |
And the event will act as the final selection event for the GB team for the European Team Championships. Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu has been named captain of the London North team. Olympic 400m hurdles bronze medallist Tasha Danvers captains London South and UK Indoor 800m champion Jenny Meadows will lead the Manchester team. Heptathlete Kelly Sotherton is set to be the big name in the Birmingham team. Newcastle, Glasgow and Sheffield will also have teams at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium for the pilot event.
