Guernsey runner Steve Dawes heads towards victory in Jersey |
Guernsey runner Steve Dawes won the 21st Jersey Hash Half Marathon in sunny yet blustery conditions on Sunday. Dawes was the first of more than 400 people to finish the race in a time of one hour 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Next to cross the line was two-times winner Paul Holey who finished just under five minutes behind Dawes. The first woman home was Jersey runner Sarah Davis who was competing in her first Jersey Hash Half Marathon, she finished in a time of 1:25.18. Although the times fell short any of the records, the competitors were talking about the windy conditions. Dawes told BBC Radio Jersey: "I felt really good for most of it, but really awful from about nine miles onwards. | It was a reasonable time in this sort of weather and I've got a few weeks until Aland to get in a bit more training so I think it's going to be okay |
"The wind just kept buffering us all the time and between 10 and 12 miles it was constantly in your face, which is when you are at your most tired." Dawes is looking forward to next month's Island Games, where he will be competing in the 10,000 metres and the half marathon. "It was a reasonable time in this sort of weather and I've got a few weeks until Aland to get in a bit more training so I think it's going to be okay," he said. But Dawes is not looking to compete in next year's Dehli Commonwealth Games. "The only standard I think I could make is the marathon and the idea of running that in Dehli doesn't really appeal too much," he added. In the children's race, 15-year-old Elliot Dorey and Chloe Turmel, 14, won the boy's and girl's divisions, while Eddie Boschat won the wheelchair event. Money raised from the half marathon will go to the Jersey Sports Association for the Disabled.
