Chambers triumphs in Birmingham

Disgraced sprinter Dwain Chambers ran a stunning personal best on his way to 60m success at the Birmingham Games.

The 30-year-old former drug cheat clocked 6.52 seconds in the semi-final before winning the final in 6.54secs.

His semi-final time at the National Indoor Arena was the second quickest in the world this year - just 0.01secs slower than American Mike Rodgers.

Londoner Chambers tested positive for the banned steroid THG in August 2003 and completed his ban in 2005.

"I had a point to prove and I think I did that today," said Chambers, who aims to win gold at the European Indoors in Turin from 6-8 March.

He will battle it out with Craig Pickering for a place in the GB team.

Pickering won the final of the 60m at the Aviva International in Glasgow, clocking 6.57 seconds at the Kelvin Hall, just 0.02secs outside his personal best.

Both men were well inside the British qualifying standard of 6.65 seconds for the European Indoors.

Chambers was prevented from competing against Pickering in Glasgow after being banned from competitions organised by the EuroMeets Consortium following his drugs ban.
