Baddeley beat a world-class field in the Dream Mile in Oslo |
Middle distance runner Andy Baddeley has been selected in the Great Britain & Northern Ireland team for this month's Spar European Cup in France. The 25-year-old won the Dream Mile in Oslo last Friday, breaking through the three-minute 50-second barrier, but will step up to race in the 3000m. Tom Lancashire, 1500m winner in Norway, will make his international debut. World 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu will race in the 200m after going under 23 seconds for the first time in Oslo. Nicola Sanders, who Ohuruogu narrowly edged out for the gold medal in Osaka, will run the one-lap event. Kelly Sotherton, the heptathlon bronze medallist in Japan, has been selected for the 4x400m relay squad having recovered from a kidney infection. UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins said: "In an Olympic year, the European Cup is obviously not top of our priority list, but it is still an important competition. | 606: DEBATE |
"We have selected the strongest team available to us and I expect many of our athletes to use this opportunity as part of their build-up towards Beijing. "There were several difficult decisions to make during the selection process and that is a reflection of some of the depth of quality now emerging in some events." Britain's men will be aiming to improve on last year's fourth-place finish behind Poland, France and Germany. In the women's competition, Russia are clear favourites to make it a dozen successive titles after going undefeated since 1997, while Britain will be aiming to consolidate their position after last year securing a return to the eight-team super league.
