Athletes compete in Jeux des Iles

Jersey team in Guadeloupe
The Jersey team will compete in a host of sports

More than 50 young athletes from Jersey have arrived in Guadeloupe, in the West Indies, for the 2008 Jeux des Iles.

The Jersey competitors started the event by taking part in the opening ceremony at Baie-Mahault stadium.

The ceremony told the story of the migrants, slaves and indigenous Indians who created today's Guadeloupe.

The first tennis match of the tournament for Jersey saw Scott Clayton and George Dupay easily beat the Croatian Island of Korkula 3-0.

But things did not go so well for Alyssia Johnson and Octavia Lamb, who lost a tougher game to the Azores 2-1.

The second day of the competition will see a start for table tennis, swimming and sailing.
