Top sprinters to race in Guernsey

Sprinter Craig Pickering

Guernsey's Athletics Club say the sprint field for the 2008 Fortis Gold Series is their fastest ever assembled.

The Welsh and Scottish athletics teams will compete at Footes Lane against Guernsey's finest.

"Last year we had Craig Pickering and probably only one other guy who was capable of running under 11 seconds," said club president Rob Batiste.

"This Wednesday we have a field of almost a dozen athletes who have PBs under 11 seconds," he added.

As well as Scottish and Welsh stars Guernsey's top two athletes will also be racing on home soil.

GB indoor 400m international Dale Garland will run the 400 outdoors and Commonwealth Games middle distance runner Lee Merrien is racing over two miles.

The Fortis Golden Series will take place at Footes Lane on Wednesday 14 May from 1900-2100 BST.
