Wanjiru broke Gebrselassie's previous record by two seconds |
Kenya's Sammy Wanjiru has had his time of 58 minutes 33 seconds set on 7 March in The Hague confirmed as a new world half-marathon record. The 20-year-old had beaten the existing mark, set by Haile Gebrselassie, five weeks earlier in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, but that effort was not recognised. The IAAF rejected his time because he failed to take a mandatory EPO test. Wanjiru had previously held the world half-marathon record with a time of 59 mins 16 secs set in September 2005. He is set to make his British debut on the 30 September at the BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle.
