Hosea Macharinyang won a close race in Edinburgh |
Kenya's Hosea Macharinyang won the Great Edinburgh Run with a sprint to the line to see off the challenge from Uganda's Boniface Kiprop. Macharinyang won the race in 29 minutes 14 seconds - one second ahead of Kiprop, with last summer's European 10,000m champion Chema Martinez third.
In the women's race, Latvian Jelena Prokopcuka won her third successive victory in the Scottish capital.
She won in 32mins 53secs, ahead of England's Jo Pavey who came second.
Macharinyang, 20, fifth in this year's World Cross-Country Championships, looked confident throughout the race.
The result was not decided until the final 1 m when Macharinyang raced ahead.
"I didn't know what to expect and did not think I would win and Kiprop made me fight all of the way," he said.
"When it came to the finish I just concentrated on the line and gave it everything. It was a very hard race."

In the women's race, Prokopcuka powered away from nearest challenger Pavey at the halfway point, and was untroubled on her way to the finish line.
The Latvian said she was delighted with her victory.
"That was really tough and after I broke away at 5km the wind was almost blowing me over, and I had to fight to keep on a straight line," she said.
"Then I could feel her (Pavey) catching me and I had to again push hard. It hurt but I did want to win for a third time again."
Pavey said: "I lost so much on that hill and I just kept trying to catch her, but every time I got close she pulled away on two more steep hills and I fell back again."
"I'm frustrated, but she is just so strong on the hills and it was good in the end to finish behind by such a tiny amount."
