Swedish stars Christian Olsson and Kajsa Bergqvist have withdrawn from the European Indoor Championships which begin in Birmingham this Friday.

Olsson, the Olympic triple jump champion, has pulled out after injuring his left thigh whilst competing in his national championships last Saturday.

World indoor high jump record holder Bergvist wants to focus on defending her world outdoor title in August.

"I have struggled to find my form," said Bergqvist, 30.

"I don't even feel capable of making heights around 1.97m and for me it doesn't seem like fun or meaningful to go to a championship."

Olsson, the European champion, also plans to concentrate on the world championships in Osaka, Japan.

The Swede had been in fine indoor form this year and produced the longest jump of the season when he flew out to 17.44m in Germany at the start of February.

But his coach Yannick Tregaro said: "Christian is suffering from a slight muscular tear in his left thigh.

"We will draw a line under the indoor season and focus instead on the summer."
