Turnbull had a successful weekend at the Irish Indoors |
Gareth Turnbull has been granted the use of the facilities at the National Indoor Arena in Sheffield ahead of his European Indoor Championship challenge. Turnbull will train at the Sheffield venue on couple of occasions prior to the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham from 2-4 March.
The Belfast athlete was pleased with his 1500 metres win and 800m third place in Sunday's Irish Championships.
"The 1500m could have been a 3.41 if I had gone full out at the end," he said.
Turnbull won the metric mile in 3:44.28 while he produced a late run to squeeze into the first three in the shorter race.
"In the 800m, I ran 58 seconds for the opening two laps and 53 for the second 400m which was exactly what I was looking for.
"To be honest, it wasn't a case of me being tired in the 800m final after running the 1500m earlier.
"I just went out the back too quick and as a result I had to run really wide for the last two laps.
"But it was good to see that the kick was there over the last 400."
Turnbull looks certain to be joined in the 1500m by his Irish team-mates James Nolan and Liam Reale.
Ireland will also probably have three contenders in the 3,000m with defending champion Alistair Cragg set to be joined by 2000 winner Mark Carroll and Mark Christie, who won the Irish title on Saturday with a 7.58 clocking.
Ballymena & Antrim's Anna Boyle and in-form Paul Hession will be selected for the 60m while Thomas Chamney (800m), Mary Cullen (3000m), Deirdre Ryan (high jump) and defending 400m champion David Gillick will also be nominated by Athletics Ireland.
