Pavey plans switch up to 10,000m
Jo Pavey
Pavey is one of the favourites for gold at the European Indoors
British runner Jo Pavey will step up in distance to tackle the 10,000m at this summer's World Championships in Osaka.

The 33-year-old will focus on the event after next month's European Indoor Championships in Birmingham, where she is running the 3,000m.

"I've never done the (10,000m) distance before, so that will be something new for me," said Pavey, who won 5,000m silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Her preparation will begin with a 10,000m race in Italy on 7 April.

"I'm planning to get the world 10km qualifier at the European challenge meeting in Italy," she said.

Pavey tops the European rankings after smashing her own Commonwealth 3,000m record earlier this month and will be favourite for gold at the European Indoors, which run from 2-4 March.

But two days later, the Exeter Harrier will begin to focus on the 10,000m, flying to South Africa with her husband and coach Gavin to a warm-weather training base.

Pavey has also been named in the Great Britain team for the World Cross-Country Championships in Mombassa on 24 March.

But she has warned she will not run in Kenya if she has any fitness worries.

"My priority is getting the qualifier and I must concentrate on that and make it my major focus after the Euro Indoors," she said.
