Jo Pavey became the first British winner of the 10-mile Great South Run for eight years with a dominant display in atrocious weather in Portsmouth. The 33-year-old Exeter Harrier coasted to victory in a time of 52 minutes and 45 seconds - one minute ahead of Serbian Olivera Jevtic in second.
Jon Brown lost out in a sprint finish to Kenya's Simon Arusei and Spain's Chema Martinez in the men's race.
Arusei won in a time of 47 minutes 16 seconds, two seconds ahead of Brown.
Pavey had originally planned an assault on Jill Hunter's 16-year-old British record of 51:14, but quickly realised it would be a hopeless task in the conditions.
"I was aware of what mile splits I wanted to do, so I was disappointed not to run a quicker time," she said.
"So I just concentrated on keeping relaxed and judging my pace. I wanted to run quicker but the weather was so tough it was exhausting me.
"To be honest the weather was too tough. But apart from that, I really enjoyed it. There was a great atmosphere and it's a lovely course."
