A 29-year-old man has died while taking part in the Great North Run. Extra safety measures and more medical cover were in place for the 36,000-strong race after four people died during last year's event.
Organisers Nova International confirmed the death, offering "our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends".
Nova added that they were respecting the wishes of the next of kin by not releasing the man's name.
