Britain's 4x100m squad held off America to secure the host nation's only win on day one of the four-nation Norwich Union International in Birmingham. Dwain Chambers, Dwayne Grant, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis led the European champions home.
Grant came in for Darren Campbell, who snubbed the team's lap of honour in Sweden and then retired on Thursday.
Russia lead the two-day event with 165 points from the USA (143), Britain (129) and China (73).
Lewis-Francis beat Chambers for second place behind USA's Jordan Vaden in the individual 100m earlier in the day.
Lewis-Francis clocked 10.41 seconds while Chambers was third in 10.43.
Tim Benjamin, who led Britain's men to European silver in the 4x400m relay in Gothenburg, was third in the 400m in 45.93 as the USA's Jamel Ashley won in 45.55.
The Welshman said he would not run again this summer after an injury-plagued season.
"My body is aching all over, but I wanted to run at home and I was not going to miss this opportunity," he said.
"That is it now for the season. I am going away to recuperate."
Helen Clitheroe produced a fine performance to finish second in the 1500m in four minutes 10.17 seconds behind Russian Olga Yegorova (4:09.53).
European bronze medallist Andy Turner finished second in 13.62 in the 110m hurdles as China's Dongpeng Shi won in 13.48.
Natasha Danvers-Smith ran a season's best as she finished second in the 400m hurdles in 54.82 seconds as Russian Yevgeniya Isakova triumphed in 54.76.
Andrew Baddeley was second in the Emsley Carr Mile in four minutes 10.08 seconds as Gabe Jennings won in 4:10.02.
The Russian team powered into the competition lead thanks to their women athletes - they won the 400m, the 1500m, the 400m relay, the 400m hurdles, 3,000 steeplechase and the pole vault.
