British athletes are to be given marks out of 10 by team bosses for their performances - and have the results given out to the public. UK Athletics will also publish comments about athletes' efforts.
Performance director Dave Collins said: "Athletes must be accountable for their performances - good and not so good."
But Olympic relay gold medallist Jason Gardener said: "I certainly don't need anybody else telling me what I have produced or not produced."
UK Athletics has already released marks and comments for the 13 British athletes who failed to get through qualifying on the first day of the European Championships in Gothenburg.
Stephen Davies, 23rd-quickest among the 1500m runners, received a score of seven and the comment: "Fair tactics, but beaten by class runners. A good debut, but needs to learn lessons."

But Shirley Webb and Zo Derham, 34th and 39th overall in the hammer throw, were awarded two points.
Their reports read: "Poor and way off the pace and below their personal best."
Collins, explaining the formula, said: "Two athletes might go out in the first round, but it is the manner of their performance that is important."
Athletics bosses say the system has been devised because of the millions of pounds of support provided to athletics by National Lottery funding.
They believe it offers members of the British squad the opportunity of a feedback system with their senior performance managers.
